Port of Procida

Procida

Procida is a municipality of Naples that includes the islands of Procida e Vivara (Phlegraean Islands). Procida, of volcanic origin, and it is the smallest island in the Gulf of Naples, separated from the mainland by the Procida Channel (about 3.4 km) while a small bridge connects it to the nearby island of Vivara. Its history is centred around the medieval village with its 9 Districts, including: “Terra Murata” e “Corricella”, the fishermen's settlement. Typical Mediterranean pastel colours characterise the landscape, where the hill of Terra Murata (91m) appears to be dominated by a fortified village of medieval origin. Its coasts give rise to various bays and headlands and have allowed for the creation of three small harbours on the northern, eastern and southern sides of the island. There is also The “Kingdom of Neptune” Marine Protected Area” located between Procida, Vivara and Ischia. A final interesting attraction of the island is the rites of the holy week which represent one of the most important religious events taking place on the island.

Marina Grande it is the main port of Procida called by the Procidani Sent'Co’, dialectal form of the original indication “Sancio Cattolica” in reference to the Abbey “Sancta Canonica”. Marina Grande is the economic and social centre of Procida. Near the port, in addition to the impressive Palazzo Montefusco o Merlato Palace is located Beach of the Grottos, so named because of its many tuff caves. Travelling along the lively Via Roma until Sancho Cattolico Square two religious symbols, held very dear by the seafarers of Procida, can be glimpsed: the Wooden crucifix from 1845 and the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà with its characteristic Baroque bell tower.
