Located on the Ligurian Sea coast, it is one of Italy's most important ports, both as a commercial and tourist hub. The city, which developed under the will of the Medici and the Lorraine families (16th century), was an important free port frequented by foreign merchants, seat of consulates and shipping companies, thus becoming a pre-eminent multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city, with churches, palaces, villas and public works linked to the names of important foreign communities, up to the second half of the 19th century.
