It is a town in Campania (province of Salerno), perched on the Amalfi Coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula. Overlooking the sea, amidst narrow streets and colourful houses, it is rich in history, art and charm. It was a thriving Maritime Republic in the early medieval period (alongside Genoa, Pisa and Venice) and gave its name to the “Amalfi Tables”, a maritime code used throughout the Mediterranean region from the 12th to the 16th century.
Since 1997, the Amalfi Coast, of which Amalfi is the main geographical and historical centre, has been recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among its main tourist attractions is the Cathedral of Saint Andrew the Apostle, the main Catholic place of worship and episcopal see, located in the square of the same name in the city centre.
